Republican leaders are stripping away parts of the campaign finance regulations on the book while the public is following the Russia investigation on President Trump. The Supreme Court gives unions, corporations, and people in 2010 Citizens United decision same rights. The president signed an executive document to weaken the Johnson Amendment that forbids firms like churches from taking part in political rallies.
End Citizens United on August 30, 2017, issued a press release to oppose the efforts of the president and his administration to strip away protections provided by the Johnson Amendment. Senator Lyndon Johnson introduced the act. Tiffany Muller in the media release gave precautions of how the churches will become tools for secret political affairs.
In July 1954, the future president was labeled a communist by various non-profit movements in his senate campaign. He used the Johnson Amendment, after the viciously attacks. The act was not controversial when it was passed since entities like universities, churches, and charities risked losing their tax-exempt status if they participated in political affairs.
For decades the Johnson Amendment has been a non-issue. Tax-exempt organizations accepted the provision as a way of separating the church from the state according to the US Constitution. Unknown to many citizens is that the amendment does not prohibit such groups to participate in politics. They have the power to organize events, weigh in on civil causes, and support a party. Churches have been holding the voter registration campaigns since they are naturally non-partisan. President Eisenhower signed the amendment into law.
Johnson Amendment makes sure that tax-exempted groups do not pass their donations to political movements. If the powers of the act are stripped off, then it means anyone can use the church to finance a political group. Contributors receive tax deductions as the money is exempted revenue duties. More institutions will prefer the approach when funding a movement.
Over the years the Johnson Amendment is becoming a problem for politicians. Organizations are coming up like Alliance Defending Freedom, to flout the law. They encourage church leaders to ignore and protest the amendment.
Donald Trump promised to repeal the Johnson Amendment during his campaigns. He signed an order in May to discourage IRS from administering the act. He stated that the objective of the amendment was to protect the religious freedom and speech. The president was signaling and setting the stage for donors to contribute finances without incurring revenue charges easily.
