End Citizens United: Save the Johnson Amendment

End Citizens United recently called on their members to be vigilant and let their representatives know that they are opposing the move of the Republican Party to remove the Johnson Amendment from the constitution. This call took place right after President Trump signed an executive order that will weaken the provision of the amendment. End Citizens United stated that removing the Johnson Amendment from the constitution will empower the corrupt politicians, while tainting the reputation of the non-profit organizations in the United States who are exempted from paying taxes. The group also claimed that they will be holding several protests and rallies across the country to express their opposition to the removal of the Johnson Amendment. Established in 2015, End Citizens United has grown exponentially within two years. From a mere thousands who have joined the organization during its inception, the group is now claiming that millions of Americans have joined them, with others living as expatriates overseas. The group was created in order to counter Citizens United, another political organization based in the United Sates which laid a historical protest at the United States Supreme Court against the Federal Electoral Council. Back in 2010, Citizens United filed a protest to the United States Supreme Court, stating that businesses and corporations should be given a status just like an ordinary individual – having the rights to support the candidate that they wanted with complete anonymity. The United States Supreme Court formulated a decision and stated that what Citizens United claims is constitutional, and they gave their go signals to businesses and corporations to support their preferred candidates. According to End Citizens United, this move initiated the control of the oligarchs to the United States government, and they wanted the United States Supreme Court to take back their ruling and decrease the power of the wealthy families in the United States. Unfortunately, the ruling still continues to exist, and the wealthy few in the United States have total control in the outcome of the elections.

The issue with the Johnson Amendment, albeit sounding similar, is totally different. The United States constitution guaranteed the separation of the church and state, but once the Johnson Amendment is removing, this provision will stop. Politicians can now use the church as their weapon to win the elections. They would only have to bring their campaign funds to the church and post it as a donation. Then, after the church received the money without the politician paying any taxes since they are exempted, he or she can now freely use the money on anything. End Citizens United wanted the government to stop their plans because it will only throw the reputation and the credibility of the American elections into an abyss of deceitfulness. End Citizens United Efforts in Protecting Johnson Amendment

Republican leaders are stripping away parts of the campaign finance regulations on the book while the public is following the Russia investigation on President Trump. The Supreme Court gives unions, corporations, and people in 2010 Citizens United decision same rights. The president signed an executive document to weaken the Johnson Amendment that forbids firms like churches from taking part in political rallies.

End Citizens United on August 30, 2017, issued a press release to oppose the efforts of the president and his administration to strip away protections provided by the Johnson Amendment. Senator Lyndon Johnson introduced the act. Tiffany Muller in the media release gave precautions of how the churches will become tools for secret political affairs.

In July 1954, the future president was labeled a communist by various non-profit movements in his senate campaign. He used the Johnson Amendment, after the viciously attacks. The act was not controversial when it was passed since entities like universities, churches, and charities risked losing their tax-exempt status if they participated in political affairs.

For decades the Johnson Amendment has been a non-issue. Tax-exempt organizations accepted the provision as a way of separating the church from the state according to the US Constitution. Unknown to many citizens is that the amendment does not prohibit such groups to participate in politics. They have the power to organize events, weigh in on civil causes, and support a party. Churches have been holding the voter registration campaigns since they are naturally non-partisan. President Eisenhower signed the amendment into law.

Johnson Amendment makes sure that tax-exempted groups do not pass their donations to political movements. If the powers of the act are stripped off, then it means anyone can use the church to finance a political group. Contributors receive tax deductions as the money is exempted revenue duties. More institutions will prefer the approach when funding a movement.

Over the years the Johnson Amendment is becoming a problem for politicians. Organizations are coming up like Alliance Defending Freedom, to flout the law. They encourage church leaders to ignore and protest the amendment.

Donald Trump promised to repeal the Johnson Amendment during his campaigns. He signed an order in May to discourage IRS from administering the act. He stated that the objective of the amendment was to protect the religious freedom and speech. The president was signaling and setting the stage for donors to contribute finances without incurring revenue charges easily.
